MACARTHUR HERITAGE LECTURE SERIES 2010

Rather than a lecture, this time we are holding an Information Night on BHP's Bulli Seam Project.

This is a massive proposal for the next 30 years of mining in the Macarthur area and seriously threatens the Georges River. It will also impact on the Nepean River, and the Upper Cataract and the Woronora Rivers within Sydney's drinking water catchment. If approved it will be the largest underground coalmine in Australia, covering 220 sq kms.

Many properties will also be undermined from Douglas Park to Menangle and Razorback, including historic buildings such as St James Church at Menangle and St Mary's Towers.

Serious questions about the project have already been raised by key Government agencies, local councils and environment groups.

Speakers from Campbelltown and Wollondilly Councils, NPA and Rivers SOS will take questions from the audience at the end of the presentations.

Local residents are encouraged to come along and be informed about this significant potential threat to our natural and built heritage as well as private property.

The lecture will be held on Wednesday July 7 at 7.30 pm at the Campbelltown Arts Centre.

Entry is by gold coin donation.

The Macarthur Heritage Lecture Series is presented by the Macarthur Branch of the National Parks Association (NPA), in collaboration with the University of Western Sydney and the Campbelltown Arts Centre.

Fantastic community support coming our way!

I just wanted to say I totally support your campaign against the mining extensions.

I grew up in Wedderburn and I always think that place really influenced the way I feel about the bush here in Australia, about the land, about country.

When I was young we had a beautiful walk down to the gorge at the back of the place where we lived, and there were hanging swamps and beautiful rock pools down in the river area.

My father wanted to develop an area not too far from where we lived, but as I understand, he wasn't allowed, partly because of biodiversity impacts. That was a victory for Wedderburn.

An odd twist on my father's vandalism of the land we lived on in Wedderburn, watching him slash and hack back the beautiful indigenous bush, is that it made me the environmentalist I am today.

There are so many alternatives out there now for energy supply that it just seems ludicrous to allow the mine extension. Same old story -  for quick profit, the land suffers.

You are doing a great job. Keep it up.
